The Banksy Petition to Hackney Council
Feb 21, 2008 | Filed in: Rants, Street Art & Graffiti

This week I’ve received a number of invites, through Facebook and email, to sign the petition to Hackney Borough Council to stop the removal Banksy’s art. I love his work and have a soft spot for all things ‘street’ since an early introduction to 80s Hip Hop culture and an ‘active’ interest in graffiti as a teenager, but to me one of the attractions of street art is the temporary nature of the works. Whether it’s removed by the authorities, painted over by other artists or simply wears away over time, street art should be left to its own fate.
Also, why should only Banksy’s work be excluded from graffiti removal? One of my biggest grips about Banksy’s fame is that there are many more stencil and graffiti artists around the world, but whenever a new piece of stencil art appears outside of Bristol or London it’s labeled a Banksy Rip-off! Ggrrrrr!!
